Airtricity/Eircom Man: Ian Bermingham

Before becoming a modern St Patrick’s Athletic icon, Ian Bermingham quietly built the foundations of his career with important early spells at UCD and Shamrock Rovers  experiences that shaped the dependable, intelligent full-back he would later become.

Early Days

Born in June 1989, Bermingham started his path to the League Of Ireland with his local club Ballyfermot United. His performances at Ballyfermot earned himself a move to another Dublin club in Lourdes Celtic where he would earn his call ups to the Ireland underage squad. At Lourdes Celtic 1 of his team mates at the time was also a someone who was also on his journey to the League of Ireland and would eventually be team mates again at St. Patrick Atheltic  in Derek Foran.

The Breakthrough

Bermingham first broke into senior football with University College Dublin (UCD), making his debut as a teenager on the 6th of April 2007 when he came on as a late substitute against Waterford United. Ian made his first start for the club a month later in a cup game against  Kildare County and would soon become a first team regular at left back. September 3rd 2007 will be a date Ian Bermingham remembers as it was when he scored his first League Of Ireland goal in a 1-0 win over soon to be crowned champions Drogheda United. The offseason ahead of the 2008 season brought plenty of speculation surround where Ian would play his football with clubs such as Stockport County and Gretna all rumoured to have been interested. Bermingham ended all this speculation by signing a new contract and committing his future to UCD for the 2008 season. He would go on to make 26 appearances in the 2008 season in a season that saw UCD finish bottom and relegated to the First Division. Ian decided to leave the club to sign for Shamrock Rovers.

Shamrock Rovers

Ian Bermingham signed for Shamrock Rovers on February 23rd 2009 and made his debut for the club on March 6th in a 0-0 draw against Bray Wanderers. Bermingham would go on to make 18 appearances for the Hoops in the 2009 season with the highlight being involved in the inaugural game at Tallaght Stadium when they faced Real Madrid when he marked a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

St. Patricks Athletic

Ian Bermingham joined St Pat’s in 2010 by his former UCD manager Pete Mahon and quickly established himself as a mainstay on the left side of defence. What he lacked in flash, he made up for in intelligence, positioning, and sheer reliability. A defender you hardly noticed because he did everything right. As seasons passed, he became captain, a standard-setter in the dressing room, and a figure who shaped the club’s cultural identity during some of its most successful years.

His 12 seasons in Inchicore saw him lift the Premier Division title in 2013, the long awaited FAI Cup in 2014, and additional cup successes along the way. More than the trophies, though, Bermingham embodied resilience through transition. Managers came and went, squads were rebuilt, fortunes rose and fell but Bermo remained the heartbeat of the club, anchoring the left flank year after year.

Across over 350 appearances, he forged a reputation as one of the league’s most dependable professionals. Younger players often pointed to him as the example to follow. Supporters trusted him. Teammates respected him. Opponents always knew they were in for a tough evening.

Even as he entered the latter stages of his career, Bermingham’s standards never wavered. His 2021 and 2022 seasons, where St Pat’s re-emerged as cup contenders, showcased his enduring value: intelligent defending, leadership, and an unbreakable work ethic that never dipped with age.Ian BerminghamIan Bermingham

The 2022 season would be Ian Bermingham’s last in the League Of Ireland and without a doubt left as not only a St Pats legend but also a League Of Ireland icon. He had earned the clubs record appearance maker of the modern era, and a player whose name will forever sit comfortably in conversations about LOI greats.

After retiring from playing professionally, he signed for local club ROC Celtic in Ballyfermot, alongside former teammate Killian Brennan. In 2025 Ian would return to Richmond Park when he was appointed the clubs Head Of Academy.

A model professional, a fan favourite, and a captain in every sense, Ian Bermingham is this week’s Airtricity/Eircom Man
