Bray’s Billy O’Neill Secures Transfer to EFL Championship Side Bristol City

Bray Wanderers have confirmed that Billy O’Neill will join EFL Championship side Bristol City this summer after a pre- contract agreement was reached between the clubs.

The move, which is subject to international clearance, will see the 17-year-old forward complete a transfer to Ashton Gate following a rapid rise through the ranks at the Carlisle Grounds.
O’Neill’s development has been swift. He became Bray’s youngest-ever first-team player at 15 years and 222 days when he made his debut against Finn Harps in October 2023.

Since then, he has made 49 competitive appearances, scoring 12 league goals, and featured 34 times in all competitions during the 2025 season. He has also played in all six of Bray’s First Division matches so far this campaign.

His standout moment came in October last year when he scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Kerry FC, becoming the youngest player to do so in the League of Ireland since 1937.Bray manager Paul Heffernan said: “We are delighted for Billy and his family. It’s a fantastic opportunity for him to join a great club in Bristol City and continue his development.

He’s been a massively important player for us in the first team for the last 12 months and has shown that he has not only the talent but the right mindset and mentality to succeed in professional football.”
Academy director Dave Foley added: “Billy’s move is a hugely proud moment for everyone at the club. He has come all the way through our Club pathway from Under 14s through to our First Team. This opportunity is a testament not only to his talent and work ethic, but also to the consistent support, guidance, and belief shown by all the coaches and staff who have played a role in his development.”

Billy O’Neill also thanked supporters, saying: “I’m delighted to have signed for Bristol City as the next step in my career. I want to thank everyone at Bray Wanderers, the coaches, players and fans, for their support.”

Behind the scenes, his development has also been supported by Podium Sports Management, who represent Billy O’Neill, with the agency also involved in moves for other young Irish players, including Dundalk’s Vinnie Leonard to Norwich City earlier this year.
For Bray, it is another academy success story. For O’Neill, it is the next step, and a serious one.
