Galway United Looking For First Win Over Shamrock Rovers in Nearly 20 Years – Match Preview

Shamrock Rovers need just a point at home to Galway United to clinch the 2025 League of Ireland Premier Division title.

Stephen Bradley had envisioned a perfect Sunday, where he would complete the Dublin marathon and take a helicopter trip to Derry to see his side clinch a fourth league title in five years. Whilst the Shamrock Rovers manager completed the marathon in 3 hours, 57 minutes and 37 seconds, his team wouldn’t have the same success.

A 98th minute Rory Gaffney goal wasn’t enough for Rovers to be crowned champions, as Derry City hold onto the slim hope of stealing the league title on the final day.

Galway United will finish the season with the slim hope of avoiding the relegation playoffs, sitting level on points with both Sligo Rovers and Waterford. John Caulfield’s men have the advantage of superior goal difference over both of those sides and a game in hand where they face a Shamrock Rovers side who have lost their last four matches.

A Stephen Walsh goal was enough for Galway United to pick up a point against Drogheda United in their final home game of the season.

With eight goals and five assists in the league this season, Burke has been a crucial aspect of his sides fight for a potential domestic double.

Stephen Walsh has been the central figure of Galway United’s late fight for Premier Division survival. After recently becoming the player to have made the most appearances for the Tribesmen, the 35 year old has come into form, scoring three goals in three games.
