League of Ireland and Scottish Premiership Compared

For several years, People on social media have debated about and compared the League of Ireland to the Scottish Premiership. While Celtic and Rangers are seen as Giants in British football, several players have came through the League of Ireland and fitted in like a glove across the water in Scottish clubs at the highest level of Scotland’s Domestic football.

League of Ireland players to embark to the Scottish Premiership:

This season, Killian Phillips (Formally of Drogheda United) lifted the 2025 Scottish League Cup for Saint Mirren alongside Roland Idowu who played briefly for Bohemians. St Mirren won their second League Cup in their club history against Celtic. Idowu scored a goal during the tournament.Phillips also broke into the Senior Republic of Ireland squad of recent. Liam Scales is another prime example of a former LOI player to break into the Republic of Ireland National team as well as playing regularly for Celtic, arguably the biggest side in the Scottish League.

Scales joined Celtic from Shamrock Rovers in the 2021 season and has hence made over 100 appearances for the Hoops and has played in the UEFA Champions League. While the Glasgow outfit are in a troublesome period, Scales is a key player on the team. Johnny Kenny has also broken into Celtic’s first team as a Front-man after previously being a Shamrock Rovers player. Despite Scales and Kenny showing skillful footballing skills at this level, they have been known to criticism. Since joining Celtic, Kenny has scored 6 goals in Scotland. Kenny had a very successful spell in Tallaght with Shamrock Rovers before returning to the boyhood club of many Irish Children.

Djenario Daniels is another example. The Suriname striker joined Cork City in Ruairi Keating’s absence when Keating picked up an untimely injury during a tough season for City, before the mid season of the 2025 League of Ireland and Daniels scored 5 goals for the Rebel Army before going on to score 4 goals and play regularly for Kilmarnock in the SPFL.

Daniels then faced an untimely injury and became a huge loss at Cork City showing potential in his short stint at leeside and now, Daniels shows promise at Kilmarnock. Aaron McEneff also had a stint at Hearts after leaving Shamrock Rovers but is now back playing with the most recent League of Ireland Champions.

It is clearly evident that former League of Ireland players proved they could compete in Scotland in recent seasons.

European Football and Cross-Irish/Scottish Encounters:

While Celtic and Rangers have had memorable moments in history with Celtic even having a European title to their name. Last season in the UEFA Conference League, both Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne finished higher than Aberdeen respectively in the League stage of the Competition. This was also the case when Shamrock Rovers finished higher than Hearts in the 2024 edition of the League stages.

In the 1980s various encounters occurred between Scottish and Irish Clubs in European football with Waterford, St Pats and Dundalk meeting Scottish opposition such as Dundee and Rangers. Bohemians would beat Aberdeen 2-1 in 2006 to ensure the first Irish win over a Scottish team in European and Competitive football.

Cork City beat Motherwell in a behind closed doors pre-season friendly last season and also hosted Celtic in Cork GAA’s stadium-Pairc Uí Chaoimh last July in a expedition friendly known as the “Cork Super Cup” in front of 30,000 Spectators. Mathew Murray scored against a relatively “reserve” Celtic side for Cork City. The match ended 2-1 with McGowan and Donovan scoring for the Glasgow outfit. With Celtic having strong links to Ireland, (Brother Walfrid, the founder of Glasgow Celtic Football Club hailed from Sligo), Celtic fans are bound to be interested in arising youth potential in the League of Ireland and were drawn to visit Cork for the occasion of a friendly against an Irish side in Cork City.

Several International Republic of Ireland players have played in Scotland also. Notable names include Adam Idah, Roy Keane, Damien Duff (All formally of Glasgow Celtic),Jamie Mcgrath (currently at Hibernian and formally of St Pats and Dundalk) and Anthony Stokes (Formally of Hbernians).

Conclusion:

In Conclusion, it can be argued, compared and contrasted that the League of Ireland is at a similar level to the Scottish Premiership. The League of Ireland is currently growing with its youth potential high. Players such as Jake O’Brien and Seamus Coleman have come through the League of Ireland to play in the English Premier league. Players such as Liam Scales from the League of Ireland have proven they are capable of breaking into first teams of the Scottish Premiership at its highest level. A League of Ireland XI V A SPFL XI would be certainly interesting.

On a side note, while the SPFL is heavily covered by Sky Sports and Premier Sports, LOITV provides coverage of every single game in the LOI as well as Virgin Media covering a substantial number of games “free to air” last season. Premier Sports also now cover Irish sides in European Competition and also showed the Cork City V Celtic friendly live on their network.
