Pádraig Amond’s Goal Not Enough For Waterford to Secure Premier Division Safety

Galway United put in a strong defensive performance that was enough to secure their Premier Division safety, and send Waterford into the relegation play-off.

The first fifteen minutes of the match saw both sides going from end to end, but without any big opportunities being created.

That was until David Hurley carried the ball from the middle of the pitch, where he was given plenty of time and space to pick out the head of Stephen Walsh. The man who recently became Galway United’s all-time appearance holder did extremely well to win his header and nod it into the bottom right corner.

Waterford needed to respond and would have if it weren’t for some brilliant defending by Killian Brouder. Kyle White slipped the ball into James Olayinka, who opted to slide it across goal, where Brouder managed to get his foot in the way to put it out for a corner and deny Pádraig Amond the opportunity to tap into an empty net.

The Tribesmen weren’t content with their one-goal lead. Jimmy Keohane did brilliantly to get into the Waterford box, where he teed up Patrick Hickey. The former Athlone Town man’s effort was incredibly blocked by Ryan Burke, and the ball deflected into the path of Walsh, who was inches away from his second. His audacious lob bounced off the crossbar before being cleared by the panicked Waterford defenders.

One of this season’s standout young talents, Conan Noonan, produced another moment of magic. Noonan beautifully delivered the ball into the box from deep, finding Pádraig Amond, whose towering header meant that he became the league’s top scorer and, more importantly, brought Waterford level.

The back-and-forth nature of the match died out in the second half, as Galway United were aware that a point would be enough to keep them in the Premier Division. Waterford substitute Dean McMenamy came closest to scoring, but his three efforts from outside the box were all slightly overhit, subsequently going over the bar.

As the game headed into additional time, John Caulfield’s men continued their resilient defensive performance while still posing a threat on the counterattack.

All but one of the Galway United players were in their own box as Waterford continued to throw everything at Brendan Clarke’s goal. However, the Blues were unable to create any significant chances as the match finished all square.

Sligo Rovers’ victory in Tallaght meant they would finish the season in seventh, Galway United in eighth, and Waterford in the ninth-place relegation playoff spot. They will now face either Treaty United or Bray Wanderers next Friday night to decide who will be playing Premier Division football next season.

Man of the Match: Killian Brouder was central to a fantastic Galway United defensive display. The 27 year old centre half made several crucial blocks and interceptions, along with 15 vital clearances. His side needed just a point to secure their place in the 2026 Premier Division, and without his calm presence tonight, the result may well have ended in a very different way.
