Pico Lopes made League of Ireland history as the Shamrock Rovers defender starred in Cape Verde’s famous 0-0 draw with Spain at the FIFA World Cup, producing a heroic defensive display.
Spain 0
Cape Verde 0
The Shamrock Rovers centre-back made history by becoming the first active League of Ireland player to feature in a World Cup match and played a pivotal role in helping his side earn a famous point against the European champions.
Lopes was immediately thrown into action, putting his body on the line as Spain dominated possession in the Cape Verde half. Just 10 minutes in, he produced a magnificent headed clearance to deal with a dangerous cross and keep the game scoreless.
Spain continued to dictate proceedings, but Cape Verde’s disciplined low defensive block made them difficult to break down and restricted many of their opportunities to efforts from distance.
Lopes and Diney Borges formed a strong partnership at the heart of the Cape Verde defence as the score remained 0-0 at the first hydration break.
The defender did have one nervous moment when a misplaced pass almost gifted Spain an opening, but Jovane Cabral produced a vital block to prevent any real danger.
Spain came closest to breaking the deadlock when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar before Mikel Oyarzabal’s follow-up effort was brilliantly tipped over by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha. Oyarzabal was then denied once again by the 40-year-old as Spain continued to pile on the pressure.
Lopes ended the first half with another commanding headed clearance and, despite a flurry of Spanish attacks before the interval, the sides went into the break locked at 0-0.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spain pressing high, dominating possession and creating dangerous openings. Lopes endured another scare when an off-target pass almost proved costly, but Oyarzabal dragged his effort just wide.
The Shamrock Rovers defender quickly redeemed himself, producing a crucial interception just minutes later to preserve the deadlock as the contest reached the hour mark.
Following the second hydration break, Spain turned to their bench in search of a breakthrough, introducing Barcelona star Lamine Yamal and Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino.
Yamal immediately injected pace into the attack and almost created the opener for Marcos Llorente, only for Vozinha to make yet another important save.
At the other end, Lopes continued to lead by example with another vital headed clearance as Cape Verde dug deeper and retreated into an increasingly compact defensive shape.
With every player seemingly inside their own final third, the African nation frustrated Spain and set up a tense final 10 minutes as they looked to cling on for a famous result.
Lopes once again rose to the occasion, throwing himself in front of another Mikel Oyarzabal effort to prevent what looked like an almost certain goal and further underline his outstanding performance.
Cape Verde even threatened to steal an unlikely victory when Diney Borges met a cross with a header, but his effort was directed straight at Unai Simón.
Their resilience was ultimately rewarded as the island nation of just over 500,000 people held Spain to a remarkable goalless draw.
Pico Lopes was at the heart of everything Cape Verde did defensively, producing a series of vital headers, interceptions and blocks to help his country secure one of the most memorable results in their history.
The centre-back will now take plenty of confidence into Cape Verde’s next Group H fixture against Uruguay on Sunday.
