Seamus Coleman announces Everton Exit after 17 years

Seamus Coleman has confirmed that he will leave Everton at the end of this season.

The Donegal native, with over 433 appearances for the toffees, made the announcement on the clubs Youtube channel this morning.

In an emotional statement, Coleman said declared that “this year will be my last as a player.”

The Killybegs born right-back said that he is not retiring from football and stated that he intends to play for Ireland in the upcoming summer friendlies before deciding on his future.

“I want to have some time over the summer to focus on what’s next, for me and my family.”

Coleman has only made three appearances this season for Everton, with his last coming in a 1-0 away win over Manchester United, in which he went off injured after 10 minutes.

Coleman joined the Merseyside club from Sligo Rovers for £60,000 in 2009. He went on to become an Everton and Ireland legend, with highlights including winning the club’s player of the season award in 2013-14 and being included in the PFA Team of the Year in the same season.

He also served briefly as interim player-manager, alongside his former teammate and full-back partner Leighton Baines for one game, that being a 2-0 Everton win over Peterborough in the FA Cup.

It is not yet known where the 79 timed capped full-back will play his football in the future.

Coleman could join former Ireland teammates James McClean, Enda Stevens, Kevin Long and Daryl Horgan by making a return to the League of Ireland. Coleman also has the opportunity to take a coaching position with The Toffees.
