Shamrock Rovers continue their strong form to start the season with their sixth win in seven games, defeating Drogheda United 4-1 to extend their lead at the top of the table to three points.
Shamrock Rovers 4
Drogheda United 1
Shamrock Rovers continued their impressive form of late defeating Drogheda United 4-1 at Tallaght Stadium. The Claret and Blue knew coming into tonight’s bank holiday fixture that they would be buoyed by their recent form and the return of their faithful away support after the conclusion of their four game ban.
For Kevin Doherty potentially getting a result today meant putting behind the off-pitch controversies plaguing Drogheda and shifting the narrative towards the progression of United’s recent form with two wins on the bounce coming into today’s clash. However, a rotated Rovers side proved far too strong.
After a scrapy start to the first half, Shamrock Rovers looked to stamp their control on the game with Matt Healy returning from injury – his intricate build up play found its way to Maleace Asamoah who forced Fynn Talley in the Drogheda goal to produce a fine stop low down to his lefthand corner.
The aforementioned Asamoah continued to impress early on as he streaked down the left wing before cutting inside on his favoured right foot and testing Talley who continued to have the answers in search of his second clean sheet in a row. Asamoah then looked to turn provider as he beat Edwin Agbaje down the left wing before looking up and squaring to Matt Healy at the top of the box whose touch let him down at the critical moment.
Mark Doyle, one of Drogheda’s many USL imports looked a frustrated man up top. The Dubliner was tasked with a one man press and received limited service apart from long balls into the channel which Sobowale and Cleary dealt with astutely – much to the disappointment of the 450 travelling Drogheda fans after their four game long away support ban.
Rovers continued to press for the games opening goal and Victor Ozhianvuna, who Hoop’s manager Stephen Bradley believes deserves a spot in the Ireland camp set John McGovern through on goal. The Newry native was stifled again by the impressive Talley. However, on the resulting corner Jack Byrne’s delivery took a deflection off Luke Heaney and fell to McGovern who fired past Talley to open the scoring.
The Champions wouldn’t have to wait long for a second goal as another Jack Byrne delivery on his 200th appearance for the club found the head of the returning Matt Healy who placed his effort past the helpless Fynn Talley into the bottom right corner.
Ozhianvuna continued to sparkle in midfield for the Hoops as he held Jago Godden off before spinning past James Bolger and playing Aaron Greene who had a glorious chance to add a third goal for the hosts. Greene had two bites of the cherry both saved expertly by Talley in goal who continued to keep Drogheda alive.
Mark Doyle who was sparsely involved in the first half steered in a header from a cross come shot attempt by Luke Heeney after a long throw into the box by Agbaje. Stephen Bradley had mentioned his disappointment in his sides second half display against Waterford on Friday, the start of the second half mirrored his previous frustration with Brandon Kavanagh coming close to equalling the score with a deflected long range strike.
John McGovern restored his sides two goal lead to the relief of manager Stephen Bradley, after Victor Ozhianvuna played an exquisite through ball to the striker who placed his effort through the legs of Talley. Shortly after scoring McGovern would turn provider, slipping in Maleace Asamoah in behind who placed his finish into the bottom right corner.
Drogheda came close at the end to making the score line more respectful as Dara Kareem was played through on goal by Brandon Kavanagh, Ed McGinty however was equal to the strikers attempt to dribble past him and flicked the ball away before picking it up on the second attempt.
Man of the Match: John McGovern
John McGovern has struggled to lay his claim as the starting striker position at Shamrock Rovers, but with Rovers making six changes to their starting lineup, McGovern was given the nod up front and he took his chance. The forward scored twice and turned provider for Asamoah’s first Rovers goal.
