Shelbourne V Galway United Match Preview – 2026 League Of Ireland Premier Division

Shelbourne will host Galway United at Tolka Park in match week three of the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Men’s Premier Division.

This will only be the second match for both sides of the new season after their games last week being called off due to unplayable pitches.

The recent heavy rainfall in Dublin over the last few weeks has now seen three games called off over the opening two weekends, after Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk’s game was also cancelled on the opening night.

It will be interesting to see how the extra week off will have affected the teams, with both sides going into the game still searching for their first win of the season.

Team News

Both sides should come into this well rested from the week off, although for Galway Dara McGuiness is still expected to be out with a long-term injury and Cillian Tollet has joined Athlone Town on loan.

For Shels, JJ Lunney and James Norris return from injury, while Elis Chapman and Sean Moore are unlikely to be fit.

Key Statistics

Shelbourne will have history on their side for this one, with Galway having failed to win a league game at Tolka Park in over a decade.

There is hope for John Caulfield’s men though, they have proved a tricky test for Shels since their return to the Premier Division, beating the Dublin side twice, albeit both victories came at home.

Key Players

Striker Mipo Odubeko will hope to get off the mark for the season, especially in front of the home fans. After an impressive performance a couple of weeks ago against Waterford, the Galway defence will have to be on alert to  if they are to keep him quiet.

For the Tribesmen, David Hurley will be crucial if they are to gain a foot hold in the midfield battle. His set piece delivery could be their best route to goal, and he will want to shake off his penalty miss against Drogheda.
