The pinnacle of domestic Irish football takes place on Sunday afternoon, with Shamrock Rovers and Cork City hoping to lift the FAI cup for the first time this decade.
Since joining the Hoops in 2016, Stephen Bradley has spoke about his desire to win a domestic double. He managed the side that beat Dundalk in the cup in 2019, and in the seasons that have followed, he’s won five of the last six league titles, but doing both in the same season has escaped him.
Cork City manager Ger Nash hasn’t had the opportunity to share his own ambitions. Since taking over the rebels in May of this year, City have struggled to pick up any run of form, seeing them get relegated to the First Division. A dire league season has been overshadowed by an impressive cup run, knocking out Waterford, Finn Harps and St Patricks Athletic on their journey to the Aviva Stadium.
Previous Meetings
19/09/25 – Cork City 1-1 Shamrock Rovers
20/06/25 – Shamrock Rovers 4-1 Cork City
02/05/25 – Cork City 1-1 Shamrock Rovers
14/04/25 – Shamrock Rovers 4-1 Cork City
Key Statistics
Both teams have scored in six of the last eight meetings, with the only win for Cork City in that time being a 1-0 victory at Turners Cross in 2023, a game where Shamrock Rovers had three men sent off.
There have been 10 or less corners in six of the last seven matches between these sides.
A victory for Cork City would move them level on cup wins with St Patricks Athletic, Sligo Rovers and Drumcondra.
Key Players
Last week Ruairi Keating returned from an injury that kept him out for the majority of the 2025 campaign. Cork City’s last win over Shamrock Rovers was over two years ago, and the man who scored the winner that night was Keating. In a season of many lows for Cork City, maybe the missing link was the 6’1 striker.
Matt Healy has been simply incredible since joining Shamrock Rovers in January. Having come up through the Cork City academy system, it’ll be feelings of both pride and regret for the Munster side when he showcases his skillset on Irish footballs biggest stage. He is the focal point of the Shamrock Rovers team, and will likely be an influential part if his new home is to defeat his hometown club.
Tactical Insights
The most recent meeting between these two sides will likely be an indicator of how Sunday afternoon may play out. Despite Shamrock Rovers having 171 successful passes in the City final third compared to Cork City’s total of 56, the ball spent 46% of its time in the central third.
Cork City were for the most part capable of reducing Shamrock Rovers to shooting from outside the box, with ten of their fourteen efforts coming from outside the area. A similar approach will be needed from Ger Nash, with Shamrock Rovers the team likely to control the larger share of possession.
Reducing them to efforts from outside the box, and then breaking quickly on the counter will be where Cork City find the most joy.
Team News
The Ireland U17 World Cup campaign will have its effects on both squads. One of those players who will be absent is Cork City’s Broddy Lee.
Josh Honohan hasn’t featured in a Shamrock Rovers squad since the title clenching victory over Galway United. John McGovern went off injured in Rovers UEFA Conference League draw against A.E.K Athens. Alex Noonan, Victor Ozhianvuna, Max Kovalevskis and Michael Noonan are all apart of the Under 17 team.
