“This group has really great potential”- Abby Rooney speaks following her move to Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers Women’s side announced the signing of Abby Rooney recently ahead of the 2026 Women’s League of Ireland.

Rooney made her senior debut for Bohemians in a 5–2 win for the Dalymount outfit over DLR Waves last season after a spell in the Dublin side’s academy, which saw her break through to the senior squad. Rooney has already played under Sligo Rovers coach Gavin Hughes at under-19 level at Bohemians and now joins Hughes’ 2026 Bit O’ Red side.

Rooney revealed her excitement to be playing under Hughes for the second time: “”I’m delighted to be signing for Sligo, it’s such a great opportunity for me personally and it is also a massive thing to be signing under “Gav” (Gavin Hughes)”

Sligo Rovers have some promising plans for the upcoming season, which Rooney spoke about along with her eagerness to get started “This group has really great potential and I can’t wait to get going and hopefully I can get as much minutes into the legs as possible and help build the team towards success as much as we can. I really can’t wait to get going.”

Sligo Rovers open their Campaign at home against reigning Champions Athlone Town on the 14th of March. The Bit O’Red finished 10th last season and will certainly be looking to build on past  that ahead of the 2026 Women’s Premier Division.
