Derry City have completed the re-signing of former Ireland international James McClean.
The annual circulation of rumours surrounding McClean potentially returning to his hometown club began in November. The noise died down after the wing-back fell back into favour at Wrexham, starting eight consecutive EFL Championship games.
However, Dan McDonald of the Irish Independent revealed that a January move became increasingly likely after the player was told last week that his opportunities would be limited for the remainder of the campaign.
The Derry native agreed to terminate his contract with Wrexham, despite having 18 months left on his deal. McClean will be remembered as a fan favorite for the Welsh side, being influential in back to back promotions as well as becoming club captain.
McClean’s previous spell with the Candystripes consisted of 88 appearances, during which he scored 20 goals and provided 13 assists.
He is not the first former Irish international to return to the league this window, with former teammate Enda Stevens signing for Shamrock Rovers last month.
The 36-year-old’s brother, Patrick, also recently completed a return to the Brandywell.
Tiernan Lynch’s side are hoping to end the club’s 29-year wait for a league title, and the high-profile signing of James McClean could prove a catalyst in that pursuit. Derry City have made several impressive additions during the off-season, including the aforementioned Patrick McClean from Sligo Rovers, as well as James Clarke, Darragh Markey, Rob Slevin and James Olayinka.
Given the calibre of players already at the club, a sustained title challenge will be expected, alongside deep runs in both the FAI Cup and a European competition.
