Airtricity/Eircom Man: Shane Duggan

This week’s Airtricity/Eircom Man is someone who led by example everywhere he went, Limerick native Shane Duggan.

Shane Duggan was born in July 1989 in Limerick. In his youth career Duggan played for Plymouth Argyle in their youth and reserve set up but never made a championship appearance.

Playing Career

UCD (2008)

Shane returned to Ireland from the UK in January of 2008 signing for Premier division side University College Dublin (UCD). Duggan made 13 appearances that season and despite UCD ultimately getting relegated, the young midfielder impressed with his composure and passing range, showing glimpses of the leadership qualities that would later define his career.

Cork City (2009 – 2013)

In 2009, Duggan made the move to Cork City to remain in the Premier Division for another season making 16 appearances and scoring 2 goals. Despite finishing third place in 2009, Cork City were relegated to the First Division due to a high court order regarding outstanding revenue receipts with the clubs holding company couldn’t be resolved resulting in a “winding up” order being issued on the holding company Cork City Investment FC Limited. The club were given several extensions to pay or to appeal, and the club narrowly staved off closure by meeting a final deadline.

Supporters club FORAS Co-Op took over the club in 2010 and entered the First Division with the name Cork City FORAS Co-op but returned to Cork City in June 2010 when they completed the purchase of rights from the previous holding company.

In the 2010 First Division season, Shane played 30 games and netted 4 goals, as City came up short in their bid to return to the Premier Division at the first time of asking. Also in 2010, Shane made his 1 and only international appearance for the Ireland u23s.

The following year in 2011, Duggan got his first taste of silverware as he helped guide Cork City back to where they belong scoring 6 times in 27 appearances as they went on to lift to the First Division title and return to Premier Division.

Over the next two Premier Division campaigns, Duggan made over 60 league appearances, adding 9 goals from midfield as City settled back into life in Premier Division.

Limerick FC (2014-2018)

In October 2013, Duggan signed for his hometown club Limerick FC, quickly becoming a fan favourite. In 2014 he made 30 league appearances, scoring 3 goals, as Limerick finished 6th in the Premier Division.
The following season he repeated the feat with 30 appearances and 4 goals, though the club were relegated after a heart breaking play-off defeat against Finn Harps.

In 2016, Duggan captained Limerick to a dominant First Division title, contributing 5 goals in 20 matches as the club bounced straight back to the top flight.
That same year, he also helped them reach the EA Sports Cup Final, narrowly losing to St Patrick’s Athletic at the Markets Field.

Waterford FC (2019)

After Limerick’s off-field struggles, Duggan joined Waterford FC for the 2019 season. He became an instant regular, featuring in 39 matches in all competitions and scoring 6 goals.
Waterford finished 6th in the Premier Division, and Duggan’s experience proved vital in stabilising a youthful squad.

Galway United (2020 – 2021)

Duggan signed for Galway United in November 2019, immediately being appointed club captain by manager John Caulfield. In 2020 he made 18 league appearances and was voted Player of the Year by supporters.
He followed up with another 11 league games in 2021, continuing to anchor the midfield and mentor the club’s younger core as Galway pushed for promotion.

Galway United would be the end of Shane Duggan’s LOI journey bringing to an end a 13 year spell across 5 different clubs in the League Of Ireland.

Post Career

In August 2021, Duggan returned home to sign for Fairview Rangers in the Limerick District League. He has frequently spoken about his time in the League of Ireland and continues to mentor young players locally, ensuring the next generation benefits from his experience.
Whether at Cork, Limerick or Galway, Duggan’s name carries weight, respected by teammates, opponents and fans alike.
