It’s Matchday in the Grandons Toyota Senior Cup Round 3 as Waterford FC take on Bandon AFC with an earlier kickoff on 7:30 PM. This commences the competitive season of 2025. Let’s have a look into our history in the Munster Senior Cup.
History
Our first succession came all the way back in 1935/36, defeating Cobh Ramblers, The second victory came in 1945/46, defeating Cork United. We take a year hiatus in victories as Cork United are victorious over us, but we were back to strike the next year as we defeat the Cork side in 1947/48. We became back-to-back winners in 1955/56 and 1956/57, overcoming newly named side Cork Athletic and Evergreen United. We seemed to be fond of the doubles as in 56/56 and 56/57, we were victorious once again as we defeated Cobh Ramblers and Cork Hibernians. We must love beating Cork as in 75/76, we overcame Cork Hibernian once again. A Waterford derby was iconic as Waterford overcame Tramore Athletic on Waterford. This is where scores are tracked as in 85/86 Waterford United brush past Wembley 4-0. We bang the double again, defeating Limerick City tightly 2-1. Although not Waterford FC, local side Waterford Crystal FC defeat Cork City 1-0 in 95/96, talk about a David and Golaith match! We took our first win since 85/86, Beating Passage 2-0 after a 20 year dud. What would you know, another double comes into play as in 08/09 and 09/10 we took Rockmount 2-1 and Midleton 3-1, clean sheets werent really our thing. Our next success was in 12/13 against Avondale slashing them 3-0. Our final and most recent victory came last year over debutant team Kerry FC, with an academy squad winning 2-1.
How The Tournament Works
Rounds 1 and 2 are played by non league sides like our opponents tonight Bandon AFC, and once round 3 is reached, League of Ireland teams are entered. The winners of tonights fixtures will advance to the Quarterfinals of the Cup, Which will be drawn at a later date. Tonights games will be played as per usual but Extra Time and Penalties will be played if needed, with Extra Time going 10 minutes per half, As per Muster FA regulations.
Predictions
We are rumored to be playing our U20’s squad, but I am ambitious for a victory. I am inclined to say 3-1 to the blues to kick off our Munster Senior Cup campaign
