Charlie Lyons set to become new Cork City captain!

Charlie Lyons is set to be handed the armband at Cork City!

The Innishannon native was impressive in his opening season on Leeside, playing a huge part in keeping 21 clean sheets in City’s First Division success last year!

Lyons grew up in a GAA household, but his footballing ability shone through as he made the move across the pond to join Preston North End, where he spent 2 years in the academy, before returning back to Cork to sign for Cobh Ramblers. Lyons spent 3 seasons with the Rams, before joining Galway United in 2022. Lyons returned to Cobh after just one season. After impressing in Cobh, Cork City lured him in, in a successful attempt to return to the Premier Division at the end of last year.

Charlie made 33 appearances for City last year, scoring 5 goals, and receiving the club’s Player of the Season!

Greg Bolger would have been in strong contention to pick up the captains armband, but the Wexford man has hinted at retirement at the end of this season. Bolger has a strong interest in coaching, and could be kept on the first team coaching team in the future. He is currently auditioning for the role as he has taken the lead coaching position for the Cork City MU17s!
