David Meyler named Ger Nash’s Assistant

Big news coming out of Leeside. Ex-City and Ireland International David Meyler has been announced as the new Assistant Manager of Cork City.

Meyler graduated from the Cork City academy. He only made 2 league appearances. Then he secured a €210k move to Sunderland. He would stay there for 4 years. After a loan spell, he joined Hull for a reported €1.8 million euro fee. He made 191 appearances for the Tigers. Then he had spells at Coventry City and Reading. After that, he hung up his boots. Meyler also went on to make 26 Senior caps for the Ireland Men’s National Team

In his now coaching career, he has worked with fellow ex-City player Colin O’Brien with the Ireland U17. Most recently, he has worked as an assistant manager with Hull City’s U18. He spent most of his playing career at Hull City.

This is now Meyler’s first shot at coaching at a Senior capacity. Many eyes will be on him. People want to see if he can steady the rocking ship, which is Cork City at this moment of time.

In the article the club released Meyler stated “I am really delighted to be back at City, where my journey in professional football started. Since retiring from playing, I have really enjoyed the coaching side of the game and this is an opportunity that I am really looking forward to. I have spoken to Ger at length about the role and I am excited about what lies ahead. I know that Ger is very keen to have a really strong Cork representation among the players and staff and, as both a Corkman and a former player, this club means a lot to me and I will do everything in my power to help us progress.”

Meyler nevertheless will not be seen in the dugout on Friday night against Shelbourne. His tenure will start after the mid-season break.
