The Midlanders’ dismal start to the season is only set to get a whole lot worse. Athlone Town, currently bottom of the first division, have released the following players: Declan McDaid, Kyle O’Connor, JR Wilson, Adam Wixten and Bastien Héry have all seen their contracts cut short, as first reported by RTÉ
A reason for these departures is unconfirmed.
Athlone invested heavily in the winter, but have seen an awful first half of the 2025 campaign, highlighted by the sacking of manager Dario Costello last month. The Midlanders sit bottom of the pack, with just three wins from their opening 15 games
It will be very interesting to see how these squad changes affect the remainder of Town’s season, with them still only sitting 5 points off 5th place Wexford.
These players can move elsewhere within the league of Ireland from the start of the summer transfer window, would you like to see any of them at your club?
