Derry beat Sligo 1-0 in the previous round of fixtures:
Derry City Goalkeeping Coach Anthony Fennelly shared his thoughts on Derry City’s win at the weekend against Sligo Rovers, speaking to LOI Talk’s EoinOg McConway.
As a player, Fennelly was part of the St Pats team who won the Premier League title in 1999 and he also has four First Division winners medals from various spells at Waterford, Cork, Dundalk and Athlone.
He also had a spell as Limerick FC assistant manager, Fennelly is a native of Cork and was previously Cork City FC’s Goalkeeper coach but he now provides service to Derry City FC as a Goalkeeper Coach.
‘He Is A Fantastic Professional Footballer.’ Derry City Coach Credits Michael Duffy For 3 Points.
Michael Duffy scored a 94th minute winner to secure the result for the Candystripes. Derry now have not lost a game since August.
“You can always trust Micheal Duffy to pop up with a goal as he is an absolutely amazing footballer. He plays as he trains, full of energy and quality and he is a fantastic professional footballer.”

Following this late victory, Derry City now sit 2nd in the table behind Champions-Elect Shamrock Rovers, keeping them in pole position to qualify for the UEFA Confrence League, sitting 4 points above Bohemians.
“Our form has been really good of late and the team has shown great character in some big games even when we go behind, the boys never give up and that has pushed us into second ( in the league table)”.
Fenelly
While it was Derry’s talisman Duffy that did see the Candystripes to victory with his late goal, the Goalkeeping coach also credited his side’s defensive efforts during the game, keeping a clean sheet against a ‘dangerous’ Rovers side.
“It is a massive 3 points for us vs Sligo Rovers, always a hard team to play against.John Russell is a very good manager, they have some good players and they become dangerous on the break but I felt we controlled the game very well.”
Fenelly
“We always looked like the team that was more likely to score we gave them nothing at the back defensively but we were very solid I think it was one of Brian Maher’s quitest games other than some distribution that I thought he was excellent with.”
With just three games left in the season, Fenelly and Derry City currently sit in pole position to secure second, as they travel to the Regional Sports Center a week from Friday to further solidify their place in the table. Manager Tiernan Lynch should be satisfied with his team of recent.
