From Tolka to Kaunas: Irish Clubs and their European Opposition

The curtain has fallen, and excitement has risen for Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers and St Pats fans alike as all their clubs have been drawn against their European opponents.

This article will discuss each team’s opponents, historical relevance, previous European encounters and what lies ahead for the Irish teams if they progress.

Shelbourne: Northern Rivalry Renewed.

A blockbuster draw is set to take place between Shelbourne and Linfield in the Champions League QR1. Many Shelbourne fans and Linfield fans alike are excited at the prospect of an all-island derby.

In their most recent season, Linfield won the league by a 22 point margin, securing themselves again into the Champions League. They are easily the most decorated team in the NIFL with a record 57 league titles, and are the only team to avoid relegation since 1890.

They have previously made eight appearances in the European Cup, reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup in 1966-67.

More recently they narrowly missed the Europa League group stage in 2019-20 after losing to Qarabağ FK on away goals after a stunning 4-4 aggregate affair.

The current narrative is between both club’s ambitious managers. Damien Duff brought a newly promoted Shelbourne side to the height of Ireland after 3 years in charge, while David Healy took over the management of Linfield in 2015, since winning 5 NIFL premiership titles, 2 Irish Cups and 2 County Antrim Shields. It’s also worth noting his near historic run in the 2019-20 Europa League.

The most notable previous affair between these two clubs is the Setanta Cup 2005 final, where Linfield beat Shelbourne 2-0 in Tolka Park.

The Azerbaijan Dream

If Shelbourne are to beat Linfield, their next opponent will be Qarabağ FK of Azerbaijan.

Qarabağ FK are no strangers to European football. They are regulars in group stages in UEFA competitions and are an Eastern powerhouse.

The exiting fixture

The loser out of Shelbourne and Linfield will play in QR2 of the Conference league, playing either FK Žalgiris of Lithuania or Hamrun Spartans FC of Malta.

St Pats: Baltic Ambitions.

The Saints were drawn to play FC Hegelmann of Lithuania in the Conference league QR1. FC Hegelmann finished 2nd in their league, and are coached by former national team defender Andrius Skerla. They play at the Raudondvaris Stadium.

FC Hegelmann have only had one previous European journey, which was in 2023 when they lost 5-0 to Shkupi.

Although they may seam an easier opponent on paper, that doesn’t tell the whole story. The team is rapidly expanding and have improved dramatically over the previous few years.

This draw was definitively the easiest Pats could’ve gotten in their group, but FC Hegelmann won’t exactly lay down. This will be an interesting match.

Baltic again, or the Balkins?

If St Pats advance past FC Hegelmann, they are set to play the winner of Nõmme Kalju and FK Partizani Tirana.

Nõmme Kalju are multiple time Estonian champions since 2012, and are regularly in UEFA qualifiers. Their more recent history leans toward a trend of early exits though, which may be good news for Saints fans.

FK Partizani was established in 1946. They competed in the 1968 Cup Winners’ Cup, falling in the latter rounds, but notably defeating Torino. They are a returnee to Europe, and ambitiously await their fight against Nõmme Kalju, and possibly against the Saints.

Shamrock Rovers: Giobráltar nó Béal Feirste?

Due to the recent exclusion of Drogheda United from the Conference league by UEFA because of multi club ownership rules, Shamrock Rovers, due to league merit, replaced their spot in QR2 of the conference league, instead of QR1 which they won through the league.

Shamrock Rovers await their fight against the winner of St Joseph’s of Gibraltar and Cliftonville of Northern Ireland.

St Joseph’s is Gibraltar’s oldest football club, founded in 1912. Despite being the oldest club on the rock, they have had limited domestic success, only winning one league title in 1996. They’ve featured in European competition, suffering heavy defeats to the likes of Limassol, with a score of 10-0. In more recent memory, Shelbourne played St Joseph’s in QR1 of last years conference league, where the auld reds beat the side 3-2 on aggregate.

Should Shamrock Rovers play St Joseph’s, it is almost certain that the Hoops will overcome them.

Cliftonville is the other possibility that Shamrock Rovers can face. They recently won the Irish Cup in 2023-24 and have been regulars in European competition since 2010. They are known for tight , compelling performances, for example their clean sheet against Cibalia.

Cliftonville is definitely the harder of the two possible opponents for The Hoops, but as we have seen in last year’s Conference league, Shamrock Rovers easily dispatched of other NIFL side Larne.

Team Reactions.

Below you can find extracts from key members of the respective teams reaction’s to their draws.

“A brilliant day for everyone at the football club, especially for those who have been through the dark times. Players and staff watched the draw together and there is already a great buzz at the prospect of an All Ireland derby.” – Damien Duff, shelbournefc.ie

“It’s an exciting draw, Europe is always special, we’ve got important league games to focus on first” – Jamie Lennon, St Patrick’s Athletic

As of the writing of this article, Shamrock Rovers have not published a presser or any media regarding to comments about their draw.
