Review
Coming into this game, Relegation was the word as both teams are trying to avoid it. Galway were hoping to try get away from any potential relegation play off while City wanted to hold off on almost as good as confirmation on relegation. My prediction proved right again which is not exactly good from my perspective as City will now almost likely play in the 2026 SSE Airtricity First Division. City are destined to go back down now. City are now 11 points behind. If the side won tonight they would be only 5 points behind Galway and would have had more momentum to try and stay up but none the less that would have been a tough ask. Fans of City will be extremely disappointed tonight as the result means we are as good as relegated. While it is not mathematically confirmed, it is impossible City are going to avoid the drop unfortunately.
Stephen Walsh opened up the scoring on the 18th minute as the Rebels once again struggled with defending a set piece. While City picked up in the last 10 minutes of the first half, Galway were the better side in the first half.On the 41st minute Alex Nolan used the wind as an advantage to use Cork Citys impressive control over the ball to blast it into the top right corner. Nolan is my man of the match for city tonight.Laedan Kamara was also energetic in the midfield for City at times until Nevin came on for him tonight as well as regulars like Maguire and Mclaughlin putting in a shift despite a poor performance from Cork.
McGuinness crossed the ball in for Galway moments before the stroke of the half time whistle to get the Tribesmen in the lead again. Stephen Walsh headered the ball home for the second time tonight. He is my man of the match for Galway tonight and his consistency and work rate is what makes him a valuable assist to Galway . He had a great game.
Overall in both halves, Galway were the better side and Cork were very poor in defending set pieces with players like Fiachre Kelleher disappointing. Galway took more control over the high possession City had in the first half.Slevin Hickey and Brouder were noticeable for the home side in the second half as City continued to struggle. Maguire had a good shot through Galway defence but failed to make it on target. Galway set up good chances throughout the second half. Maguire was offside on the 88th minute. Shelbourne beat Waterford as Galway’s result will worry the blues.

Cork City will return home to face St Pats live on RTE 2. Pats will be hungry to get into a cup final and push for europe with the match being a home fixture in Turners Cross, the only saving grace For Nash’s team who now face relegation. Caulfield’s Galway will face Bohemians on the 17th of October as they will rest until after Cup and international action take place. Galway will feel a bit more relieved to have won tonight in Eamon Deacy Park.
Another disappointing result on the hop for City tonight. While City played well at times and have played well of recent, there is no point in covering the reality of the situation as the statement now is that relegation is not now if Cork City are going to be relegated back to the bottom division but WHEN!
