Recently we spoke to Cobh Ramblers manager Mick McDermott after his Ramblers triumphed in a 3-1 win at home to Longford Town. Mick was asked about how important the win was in context of his sides recent form.
“I find this strange in context of recent form. I read an article in a Cork newspaper and really bizarre to read an article in a local newspaper talking about how we’d be under pressure. And the only reason we’re six points behind Dundalk is because Bray beat them a couple of weeks ago, we’re in second place because we deserved to be in second place. Maybe the article should say that at one point of the season, out of 33 points, we picked up 27.“
McDermott’s side have since then picked up 6 more points, with wins over Wexford and Bray Wanderers, scoring six goals and conceding none.
Ramblers currently sit in second place, remaining six points behind Dundalk but have stretched their lead over Bray, who sit in third place, to 5 points.
Mick added his statement expressing his frustration over comments made on his side.
“This team is more than capable in the last 12 games of picking up a lot of points. But the first time in 20 years, the club’s challenging for a league title. They haven’t been in second at this point in the league in 20 years. Maybe that should be the basis of the article, instead of a multic column article about how Cobh Ramblers is under pressure, and need to pick up wins and recent form. Recent form?! Two matches. These boys have fought all season. The club’s in a position in the league they haven’t been in 20 years. The boys deserve a bit of respect, and I would like to think that that would be a local newspaper, would show that when he’s writing articles. So recent form. What are we talking about? Two matches? What about the other 15 before that? Let’s put this in context. Where the club was, where the club is, and let’s write about that.”
Cobh Ramblers travel down the N22 to face Munster rivals Kerry FC in the FAI Cup this Friday in the FAI Cup.
