Shelbourne vs Sligo Rovers Match Preview – League of Ireland Premier Division

The league’s two in-form sides clash at Tolka Park in a match that could have big repercussions at both ends of the table.

Joey O’Brien’s side didn’t enjoy the luxury of a rest during the international break, having been in action twice in the last seven days. Last Friday night they beat Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium, delaying their inevitable title celebrations. Then on Monday, a late Jack Henry-Francis goal earned Shels three points and sent Cork City back down to the First Division.

The Bit O’Red’s second-half-of-the-season form has put them in a strong position to avoid the relegation play-off, currently sitting three points ahead of rivals Galway United. Last time out, John Russell’s men were on the receiving end of a late Michael Duffy goal, narrowly losing to Derry City at the Brandywell.

Key Players

John Martin has been Shelbourne’s standout player in this fixture in 2025, with four goals and one assist in three games. Martin has only scored one other goal in the Premier Division this season, but it would be unfair to overlook his FAI Cup hat-trick and some crucial goals on the road to qualifying for the UEFA Conference League.

Sligo Rovers have so many incredible talents on their books, but one who doesn’t get the credit he deserves is 18-year-old Gareth McElroy. Of the seven clean sheets Sligo have kept this season, McElroy was involved in five. He’s a very talented defender and will likely be the next highly talked-about prospect to come out of the Showgrounds.

Team News

Paddy Barrett was sent off in the backend of Shelbourne’s victory in Tallaght and will miss this match through suspension. Sean Moore, Sam Bone and Conor Kearns are all unlikely to feature due to injury.

Sligo Rovers will be without Ryan O’Kane due to terms of his loan not allowing him to play against his parent club. A foot injury will keep John Mahon out of the squad.
