Sobowale Sublime As Shamrock Rovers Make It Three Wins In A Row

Shamrock Rovers teenage due steal the limelight as Hoops extend league lead.

Galway United 1

Shamrock Rovers 3

It took less than 90 seconds for the league leaders to take the lead. Ed McGinty found the head of Sobowale on the halfway line, with the on loan full-back knocking the ball across to John McGovern. The 23 year-old quickly found Michael Noonan on the right flank, with the teenager cutting inside and fantastically slotting the ball past Evan Watts.

Galway United responded with a series of half chances, but failed to force a save from Ed McGinty.

Things would go from bad to worse for The Tribesmen, as Shamrock Rovers doubled their lead. A tame Olunatunmise Sobowale cross deflected off of Ed McCarthy, forcing Watts into a sudden change in movement. The Welshmen palmed the ball onto the post, with Adam Brennan waiting to tap home his second goal of the season.

Shamrock Rovers were growing in confidence. As they controlled possession in their own half, both full-backs stood in line with Michael Noonan on their own respective touchlines. Stephen Bradley’s side were patiently waiting to work the ball through midfield and break quickly.

The half ended with Galway United’s first shot on target, Aaron Bolger’s effort from distance was no more than a routine save for McGinty.

Rovers started the second-half with the same intensity. Brennan dashed down the wing before teeing it for Victor Ozhiavuna, who left the ball run through his legs allowing Matt Healy the chance to make it three, but his effort went wide of the post.

On the other side of the pitch Stephen Walsh and David Hurley both attempted to claim the ball outside the box, the latter winning possession, with his shot deflecting over the bar. The regret of the missed opportunity quickly went away, as Hurley’s corner found substitute Matthew Wolf at the near post, with the former Sligo Rovers man halving the deficit.

John Caulfield’s side nearly scored again from a set-piece. Hurley would find the head of another substitute at the near post, this time Frantz Pierrot, with his effort being cleared off the line.

Pierrot would be in again soon later, with an audacious attempt at a bicycle kick. The ball rolled far wide of the Shamrock Rovers goal.

Ozhiavuna showed why he’s received so much plaudence in recent weeks, beating three Galway United players to advance the ball forward. He would get the ball back soon after just outside the box, the 17 year-old layed it off to Sobowale, who smashed the ball into the top left corner.

The home side continued to apply the pressure in the dying minutes of the match, Lee Devitt coming closest to getting a goal back. They failed to create something good enough to beat McGinty for a second time, as Shamrock Rovers made it three successive wins.

Galway United will travel to The Showgrounds next week to face Sligo Rovers, while Shamrock Rovers are away to Dundalk.

Man Of The Match: Both Shamrock Rovers full-backs were both deserving of being named man of the match, but Sobowale edges it. The on-loan St Mirren man was a constant threat, involved with the first two goals and scoring the third. He continues to demonstrate every week why many have him down as the signing of the season.
