Treaty United Hit Athlone Town For 5

Treaty United managed to put last week’s collapse against Cobh Ramblers behind them as they hit Athlone Town for in a 5 star performance at the Athlone Town stadium last night. Treaty United captain Lee Devitt was the star of the show as he took home the match ball with a excellent hattrick with his second goal up there as an early goal of the season contender.

Athlone Town had been tipped by many to be serious title and promotion contenders for this upcoming season, but 2 defeats from their opening 2 games will have supporters starting to ask a few questions.

It only took 9 minutes for the Limerick side to open the scoring with their very first attack of the game. Karl O Sullivan putting in a low cross across the box and in slided Lee Devitt to get his side in front much to the delight of the vocal travelling support.

8 minutes later, O Sullivan and Devitt were linking up again, O Sullivan laying off to Devitt who curled the ball into the top corner with an unstoppable shot. And just before halftime it was 3-0, Ben Lynch making a powerful run through the heart of Athlone Town defence and took on the responsibility and made no mistake in giving his side a brilliant lead going into the halftime break.

Into the second half then, And Devitt had to wait till the 81st minute to complete the hattrick as he found himself in space inside the Athlone Town box and made no mistake when the chance arrived. (All 3 goals by Lee Devitt were struck with his left foot)

And to round it off Canadian attacker Ben Lee and Trpimir Vrljicak combined brilliantly to put in former Sligo Rovers man Mark Byrne in on goal and once again kept his composure to make it 5-0.

Exactly the result Treaty United will have wanted after the opening day defeat and will go into next week’s clash with Finn Harps at the Markets Field full of confidence.

For Athlone Town, There commentary team were quick to point out that they lacked a “target man” in their attack.
