Airtricity/Eircom Man: Billy Dennehy

On the day of Kerry FC’s first ever FAI Cup Semi-Final, where they travel to Tallaght Stadium to face Shamrock Rovers, it is only fair to look at one of the few connections between the clubs, Billy Dennehy.

Dennehy spent the majority of his career playing in the League of Ireland, including spells at Cork City, Derry City, St Patrick’s Athletic and Limerick FC, but predominantly with Shamrock Rovers. In 2023, he moved from the pitch to the sideline, becoming the first manager in Kerry FC history. He stepped down from that position at the end of the season and took up the role of the club’s CEO.

Early Career

Dennehy was an extremely talented athlete in both GAA and football. He was part of a Kerry Minor team that won the 2004 Munster Championship and was also a key player for one of Kerry’s most successful Gaelic football sides, Austin Stacks.

However, football was his true calling. Playing with Tralee Dynamos at grassroots level, before he went overseas for trials with a host of English clubs, including Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, before ultimately signing for Mick McCarthy at Sunderland in January 2005.

He would have to wait just under three years for his first senior appearance, joining League Two side Accrington Stanley on a one month long loan. He played seven times during that spell under then-manager John Coleman, the former Waterford boss.

Return to Ireland

In June of 2008, Dennehy was released by Sunderland without making a single senior appearance. His early League of Ireland career lacked stability, he spent a few months at Derry City, making just four appearances, followed by a year at Cork City.

It was with the Rebel Army that he finally showcased his talents, playing 31 times, scoring 7 goals and providing 2 assists. Despite a strong debut season at Cork City, he chose to move to the capital and join Shamrock Rovers for the 2010 season.

Becoming Established

Dennehy played 42 times in his debut season at Shamrock Rovers, scoring eight goals and setting up another eight, making himself an integral part of the Hoops’ title-winning campaign. The following year was even better, with 13 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, including a hat-trick in the FAI Cup against UCD, as Rovers once again won the league.

Over the following two seasons, he scored a combined ten goals, while Shamrock Rovers went without a trophy. The main highlight came in the Europa League group stage, where Dennehy played 90 minutes at the now-demolished White Hart Lane.

He returned to Cork City in January 2014 and was still comfortably one of the best wingers the league had to offer. The 2014 campaign proved just that, as Dennehy scored 16 goals and provided 8 assists, including a goal in a 3-0 win over Shamrock Rovers. The following season was more of the same, with 13 goals and 10 assists, most notably a hat-trick against Drogheda United.

Latter Years

Once again, Dennehy made the decision to leave Cork City for the capital, this time joining St Patrick’s Athletic. His wait of just under five years for a trophy came to an end when St Pat’s won the League Cup. He scored 12 goals across his two seasons in Inchicore.

The final season of his League of Ireland playing career was spent with Limerick FC, where he mostly operated as a left back. The last goal of his career came in July 2018 at the Markets Field against Waterford in a 2-1 win.

Career Aftermath

Dennehy was involved in youth development in the Kerry District League and eventually with the Kerry FC youth teams before taking charge of the senior side when they joined the League of Ireland in 2023. While he was a fantastic player on the pitch, scoring 83 goals and making over 350 appearances, perhaps what he deserves the most praise for is what he has done off it.

Billy Dennehy has been an integral part of the development of young players in the Kingdom and has done tremendous work in establishing Kerry FC as a sustainable League of Ireland club. Now, players growing up where he once did are afforded the opportunity he never had, to represent their county in the League of Ireland.

He will now watch this Kerry side travel to the club where he enjoyed the most success, Shamrock Rovers, and to the stadium he once called home, a true full circle moment.
