Airtricity/Eircom Man: Dave Rogers

Few players still ring in fan’s ears for more than 20 years, but it seems that every time European football is mentioned around Shelbourne fans, the vivid memory of Dave Rogers comes up.

Playing Career.

Dave was born in Liverpool. He started his career at Tranmere and Chester before later hopping around Scottish clubs such as Dundee and Ayr United. After leaving Dutch club Cambuur Leeuwarden, he joined Shelbourne in June of 2003.

Rogers made his debut against Derry City, and over the next few weeks would quickly establish himself as a key member of the Shelbourne squad under Pat Fenlon. Throughout his time at Shelbourne he won the league with them in 2003, 2004 and 2006. His growing reputation earned him the name “Scouser” by Shelbourne fans.

His fame defining moment came on August 4th 2004, where Shelbourne faced Hadjuk split at home, losing 2-3 on aggregate. In the 78th minute, Rogers scored an infamous volley from outside the box. Later, Alan Moore would also score, securing the aggregate win for Shelbourne. This made Shelbourne the first Irish team to qualify for the Champions League QR3.

When Shelbourne went into financial trouble, he left the club and joined Pat Fenlon who took over Derry City on a two year contract. He only made 12 appearances for them before signing for St Pats. He would be loaned out to Sporting Fingal and then would leave St Pats in November 2008.

He later had spells at the newly formed Cork City, Limerick, Monaghan United and Drogheda United. In January of 2012, Rogers decided he would retire from football.

Managerial Career.

In 2013, Rogers was appointed as lead coach of Liverpool FC’s International Academy. He was later changed to the academy manager of Liverpool’s residential academy in India. He would later be recruited to the Indian national team as the assistant manager. He would later become the manager of DSK Shivajians in India, but due to a financial collapse at the club, he would leave and later become Liverpool’s International Academy Manager in South Korea.

In the end of 2022, it was announced that Rogers would become the Finn Harps manager on a 4 year deal. After a poor tenure, he left the club due to “personal and family reasons.”

In June of 2024, he became the manager of Maltese Premier League side Balzan. Another poor tenure saw him leave the club.

A Storied Career.

Now, Dave Rovers often appears in commentary roles on Shelbourne games on Virgin Media and Premier Sports.

Recently in June of 2024, he revisited Tolka Park and relived his time at the club ahead of Shelbourne’s anticipated return to European Football for the first time since 2006. You can watch that video below.
