The Match Review:

Is it near impossible for the Rebel Army to pursue a great escape? They sure made an indication as they beat Munster rivals Waterford once again at home in Turners Cross live on Virgin Media 2. Both fans made their voices heard from just before kick off. Republic of Ireland Manager Heimar Halgrimmson was also spotted attending the Munster Derby. Cork City won 2-0.

The game began shortly after a tribute to the late and great LOI legend Ollie Horgan who the league sadly lost during the week. While City were sloppy at times, they played great football when on the ball. City had a goal disallowed in the first half.Waterford attacked well in the first half giving Conor Brann several challenges which he comfortably faced with impressive saves. Overall City would outclass Waterford in the Match. Players such as Anderson and Maguire proved to be helpful in securing tonights result. The first goal came about in the dieing minutes of the first half as No.8 Evan Mclaughlin superbly hit the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the shed end. Josh Fitzpatrick also appeared impressive but was subbed off very early as Alex Nolan came on for him.

Matthew Murray was brilliant for City tonight and very consitent for a 17 year old as he was constantly up and down the field and his work paid off as once again he got a goal which came with a hard knock which saw him being replaced by Sean Murray. It has been reported that he is back up and walking after the knock. He truely deserved the title “Man of the Match” by all accounts. City are currently now sitting 7 points below Sligo Rovers who face Bohemians tommorow night. Unfortunately for city, Sligo have a game in hand. A trip to Ballybofey is the next task for City after the international break as they meet Finn Harps in FAI cup quarter final action. Overall it was an extremely positive result for Cork City and a good night for Ger Nash and his backroom staff. In my opinion Conor Brann was my standout player tonight for his impressive saves in the first half. City are lucky to have signed him on a 3 year contact. He has made a huge contribution to the club as the Goalkeeper. David Odumosu also returned to the bench tonight. Mathew Kiernan is also a worthy mention as he played well tonight. The defender has just completed his Leaving Certificate exams.

As for Waterford, this is now their third defeat on the trot as they are not clear off the relegation playoff by any means but in a better position than Cork City. Waterford face Bohemians in their next fixture in Dalymount Park. Despite conceding 2 goals, Mcmullen appeared to be good at times in what was an overall poor performance from the blues.

Overall, it is encouraging to see City get another win over Munster rivals on the back of a 3-0 loss away to Bohemians. The question on everybody’s lips will be are Cork City relegated for definite?
