Match Preview: Drogheda United vs Galway United

Kevin Doherty’s Drogheda United host Galway United in matchweek three of the 2025 League of Ireland Premier Division season.

Both sides are coming off impressive victories last time out, Drogheda with a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to Sligo Rovers and a Patrick Hickey brace saw Galway United pick up all three points against a St Pats team many have picked to win the league.

Team News

Drogheda United will again be without Paul Doyle, Douglas James-Taylor and Elicha Ahui for the third successive game week, although it is believed Douglas James-Taylor should be returning to action within the next couple of weeks.

Conor McCormack made a return to the Galway United squad last week, he was an unused substitute vs St Pats. Both Gary Buckley and Edward McCarthy are yet to feature in a John Caufield’s match day squad so far this season.

These sides met four times last season, on two occasions ending in a scoreless draw and the other two ending in victories for Galway.

Players to watch

The key man for Galway United so far this season has undoubtedly been Patrick Hickey who is currently the leagues top scorer with three. The American was successful with all of his long balls, won five out of his eleven duels and scored two goals against St Pats and will be hoping to be on the the score sheet for a third successive game week. Brendan Clarke also put in a great performance vs St Pats, making seven saves.

Darragh Markey got on the score sheet vs Sligo Rovers last week with a very impressive performance, winning all eight of his ground duels, one of his aerial duels, completing all of his dribbles, three out of five successful accurate long balls and of course scoring a goal. Conor Keeley also deserves a mention for his impressive defensive performances so far this season.

The bookies have Galway United as the favorites going into this game priced at even money, with Drogheda United priced at 14/5 and a draw priced at 21/10.
