Match Preview: Galway United vs Shamrock Rovers

Galway United have been one of the standout teams in the first 7 match weeks of the 2025 Premier Division season and will face Shamrock Rovers on Friday night, with the hopes of recording a first victory over the hoops since a First Division tie in 2006.

Stephen Bradley’s side are coming off a stalemate with Derry City at Tallaght whilst Galway were also in action in the capital, where they picked up three points on the Northside against Bohemians.

Team News

Brendan Clarke will remain absent from the Galway United squad, in his absence Evan Watts has stepped up and featured in last week’s team of the week. The club also made the midweek announcement of the departure of winger Daniel Stynes.

Lee Grace, Danny Mandroiu and David Nugent will all miss the tie due to injury for Shamrock Rovers and Ed McGinty will be unavailable due to suspension.

Key Stats

In the four meetings between the sides last season Shamrock Rovers came out on top twice and shared the points on the other two occasions. As previously stated, it’s been almost 20 years since Galway’s last victory over Rovers and based on form there has been no better time to bring that wait to an end.

Shamrock Rovers have conceded first in 5 of their 7 matches this season and Galway are yet to be kept scoreless but have also been unable to score more than two goals in a single game.

Key Players

It’s hard not to look at Moses Dyer after his performance last week, two goals at Dalymount Park including an absolute screamer that is the stonewall favourite for goal of the season. With his high confidence and electric energy he will be sure to cause a seemingly unsettled Rovers defence problems.

Friday nights game at Eamon Deacy Park is a big one for Leon Pohls, who will start in nets in the absence of Ed McGinty. It’s a big chance for the German shot stopper to try and reclaim his number one spot.

Betting Odds

Somewhat surprisingly Shamrock Rovers are the bookies favourites at 6/5 while Galway United are priced at 12/5 with a draw at 19/10.

When and Where to Watch

The game kicks off at 7:45pm on Friday the 4th of April and can be streamed live via LOITV.
