Cork City owner Dermot Usher faced a mixed reception during a fan forum held ahead of Friday night’s clash with St Patrick’s Athletic.
Speaking candidly, Usher said he was “disappointed” by the protests directed at him but was particularly disheartened by chants targeting the players, including cries of “You’re not fit to wear the shirt.” While he acknowledged that such criticism may have been warranted two years ago, he firmly defended the current squad, stating that “every player is fully committed to giving their best for the club.”
Usher revealed that three new signings are expected this summer, adding to the three already brought in. He assured fans that financial constraints will not limit recruitment, declaring, “Money is not an issue.”
One contentious point raised was ticket pricing – a hot topic on Leeside. When questioned, Usher stood firm, saying fans need to “get over ticket prices,” and maintained that lowering them would not be financially sustainable for the club.
In terms of departures, goalkeeper Tein Troost had initially agreed to stay but reversed course a day after the recent draw with Drogheda. Forward Djenairo Daniels is also set to depart, having always intended to leave in the Summer window despite being under contract until season’s end.
Despite the on-field struggles, Usher reiterated his commitment to the club – even in the event of relegation. However, he warned that ongoing abuse could force him to reconsider his position.
To date, the Kildare businessman has invested €1.4 million into the club. He also highlighted positive commercial returns, with jersey sales generating between €650,000 and €700,000.
