“Well I thought your team were team were shocking”
These are the alleged words uttered by Referee Damien Macgraith following Cork City’s loss to Waterford at the RSC due to a Kyle White late winner in which Tim Clancy was shown read after the 90.
Clancy’s side were reduced to 10 men in the 63rd minute when Freddie Anderson was shown a harsh second yellow card and was given his marching orders by Macgraith. This would prove pivotal in The Blues victory. Clancy post-match had his say on the sending off.
“Freddie’s (Anderson) conceded 2 fouls in the game, I’m thinking the referee has given him two yellow cards. Multiple of their players conceded a lot more than 2 fouls and weren’t booked.”
“If you look at the lead-up to Freddie’s first booking Kitt Nelson goes to clear it and a player goes in with his studs up, it should be a free kick and he doesn’t give it. I thought Damien was really poor today to be honest”.
Clancy was sent off after the game by Macgraith after being shown yellow twice within a couple seconds of each other. Clancy had his say on the post-match interaction during his interview with Virgin Media.
“I said to Damien after the game “I thought you were shocking” and what he said back to me was an absolute disgrace. He said “Well I thought your team were shocking”. Now that’s a match official who’s supposed to be officiating a game. I then said “That’s your ego getting the better off you” and he gave me two yellow cards and sent me off.
The way in which this situation is dealt with will be very interesting to see. Will the league reprimand Macgraith for his comments or protect him against what Clancy has allegedly said.
Either way this is not a great look on Damien Macgraith at all.
