Shamrock Rovers Set to Seal Deal for Irish Cup Star John McGovern

Shamrock Rovers are expected to complete the signing of Dungannon Swifts striker John McGovern according to reports by the Belfast Telegraph.

McGovern is a highly rated striker and has attracted interests from several League of Ireland clubs after his impressive debut season with Dungannon Swifts. In the 2024–25 season, McGovern made 34 league appearances, scoring 13 goals. He also netted 5 goals in 3 Irish Cup matches and added 2 goals in a League Cup appearance, totaling 20 goals across all competitions.

McGovern played a pivotal role in Dungannon Swifts historic Irish Cup victory. He opened the scoring in the final against Cliftonville, but the sides couldn’t be separated and the game went to a penalty shootout, with Dungannon Swifts triumphing on penalties, securing their first-ever Irish Cup win.

An interesting fact about McGovern is that before focusing on football, McGovern was a notable Gaelic footballer, representing Down at the inter-county level. He won Ulster U20 Football Championship in 2023.

McGovern signed a two-year deal with Dungannon Swifts in 2024, so Shamrock Rovers will have paid a fee for his services, and he will only be able to join Stephen Bradley’s side on July 1st when the transfer window opens.

Shamrock Rovers currently lead the Premier Division, and bringing in such a talented footballer will massively boost their hopes of reclaiming the league title. The hope is that McGovern can fill the void left by Johnny Kenny
