3 Ships Set Sail

The first round of fixtures have come and past, as Waterford face off against Sligo Rovers. With both sides who have been in a poor run of form, they’re looking to bounce back.

Quarter Check-Up

Waterford have picked up 9 points from a possible 24 whereas Sligo have been slightly lesser, only taking 4, their only win coming against Shamrock Rovers.

Opening Night Flashbacks

Having these teams face off on opening night, the Blues came out victorious 3-2 in enthralling fashion, Mistakes from the Sligo back line, Sloppiness in midfield and consolation goals late on, this fixture lacked nothing. Sligo had quite a new squad, less core players from the previous season. Waterford were in the same boat but they seemed to had gelled quicker after a poor pre season.

Managerial Woes

As these poor runs continue, Fans from both sides have began to question the man at the helm. John Russell seems to be on the chopping board, with 1 win from 9 and a singular draw on the road to Cork. Long may seem to be slightly safer, albeit not quite. This start has been less than ideal but he’s been better over time.

Injury Watch

Veteran Andy Boyle will watch down from the stands as he nurses a muscle injury, expected to be out for a couple of weeks, Matty Smith has still not returned from his knock, with no speculated return. Fans are beginning to wonder will he return or depart in the summer without making an appearance in a blue shirt. Sligo’s Lintot has picked up a muscle injury, and Denham has a knock, with both out for a couple of weeks. Danger man Waweru has ruptured his Achillies Tendon, and will not return this season.

Predicted line ups

Personally, for the Blues I am thinking that McMullan will start in goal, Burke, Leahy, Horton and Bakboord in the back line, Radkowski, McMenamy, McDonald, McCormack, in the middle of the pitch and Amond along with Lonergan to lead the attacking pace.

Sligo look to be fielding Sargeant in net, Hutchinson, Mahon and McElroy guard the back, Wolfe, Reynolds, Malley, Elding and Manning plotted central and Fitzgerald and Hakiki press the front.

Game Thoughts

I’m confident we will gain momentum early on and continue throughout, taking 3 points in a 3-1 victory. I also think Russell will get the sack if he does not gain points from this.
