Crystal Palace are in pole position to sign Cathal O’Sullivan, the highly rated Cork City winger who’s been catching the eye since breaking into the first team just over a year ago.
Still only 17, O’Sullivan made his senior debut for City on February 16th 2024, aged just 16. Since then, he’s become known for his signature move – cutting in off the right flank onto his left foot and bending the ball into the far top corner. It’s a move he’s made his own, and one that’s quickly made him a fan favourite.
He came through Cork City’s academy after joining the U13s in 2020 alongside centre-back Luke Downey. From the start, he was viewed as one of the most promising players in the setup. A serious ACL injury in 2023 stalled his momentum, but he returned stronger – and now looks more than ready for the next level.
Several clubs have been monitoring him closely, including Everton and Newcastle United. But it’s Crystal Palace who’ve made the biggest push – and it’s understood their strong reputation for youth development played a key role in O’Sullivan leaning towards a move to Selhurst Park.
Palace already have a good connection with Cork City. Franco Umeh, another product of the club’s academy, made the move to Palace and has been progressing well, now a regular in the first-team squad. Jake O’Brien, who also came through the Rebel Army ranks and spent time at Palace, is now playing regularly for Everton.
Cork City have quietly built one of the best youth systems in Ireland. In the last couple of years alone, they’ve seen Mark O’Mahony join Brighton, Jaden Umeh move to Benfica, and Matthew Moore sign for Hoffenheim. For a League of Ireland side, it’s an impressive record that speaks to the quality of coaching and the culture being built at academy level. Head Of Academy, Liam Kearney has been a huge help to nurture Cork City players to the next level, both on and off the pitch.
With O’Sullivan attracting serious attention, City would prefer to strike a deal this summer and bring in a proper transfer fee, rather than lose him for the standard €300,000 compensation if he moves in January.
One way or another, it feels like only a matter of time before O’Sullivan becomes the next name on that growing list of Cork City graduates making their mark across Europe.
