Sligo Rovers V Cork City Match Preview – League Of Ireland Premier Division

The Rebel Army travel to the Showgrounds for Saturday night football as Sligo Rovers look to get back out of the relegation playoff spot.

Introduction:

On Saturday 25th October, Cork City are on the road again. Drogheda beat City 1-0 in Sullivan Lambe Park last time out. City will return to home turf against Derry City before their trip to the Aviva. This weeks game in Sligo gives Ger Nash another chance to let his players stretch their legs as well as try out youth prospects. The likes of Sean Maguire and Conor Brann were benched in last week’s game as Nash appears to be resting some of his players for the cup to avoid any concerns possibly.

Sligo Rovers lost 3-1 away to Shelbourne last time out. The bit o’red can now not afford to lose this match as they play the Champions-Elect Shamrock Rovers away in their last fixture. To avoid Waterford or Galway putting pressure on Sligo in the fight between the three to avoid “9th” ,a relegation spot (which Sligo look highly unlikely to be involved in), a win is essential for the side. After a poor start, to the season, Sligo have recently shown that they have what it takes to stay up.

Previous meetings:

25/06/2025 Cork City 2-3 Sligo Rovers

26/04/2025 Sligo Rovers 1-1 Cork City

07/03/2025 Cork City 1-1 Sligo Rovers

Prediction and Key players:

Sligo 2-1 Cork City

Sligo-Cian Kavanagh has performed well this season and it could come down to him if Sligo need a goal. Kavanagh scored 5 goals for the Connacht outfit this season in the league. The 22 year old is definitely one to watch.

Cork City-17 year old Brody Lee has shown his capability when he started against Drogheda for the Relegated side. The Youngster was recently called up to the Ireland u17 squad ahead of their World Cup in Qatar. It is possible Lee could get game time in this match if vital players are put on the bench ahead of the Cup final and before Lee heads to Qatar.
