A brand new idea from LOI Talk, where we pick 3 winners and 3 losers from the previous round of matches. This has been highly inspired by the “Winners and Losers” segment on the Formula One app.
This will be the first instalment of hopefully many to come. We will initially only be covering the Men’s PD but plan to expand in the future. Let’s begin!
Winner: Alex Bannon
Alex Bannon scored two crucial goals to gain Derry a point in a game they thought they lost already. He was signed on for the second half, swapping with Adam Frizzell. In the 74th minute Bannon scored a curdling strike from inside the box which made its way over Anang. Later in the 84th a frantic strike from a hectic corner saw Bannon score again for the Candystripes, securing a crucial point in the league. What a moment for the 21 year old!
Loser: Waterford
Despite Waterford having great opportunities, they couldn’t convert their pressure into goals. This defeat slows them down and puts them back into the mid table picture. Their chance creation wasn’t up to par. You can’t leave chances like that against a team hungry for points like Cork City.
Winner: Goalkeepers
Although the Sligo and Bohs game ended 0-0, there were some takeaways. Both Sargeant and Chorazka made key saves throughout the game. Both teams happy with defensive performance despite a goalless deadlock. Honours even in the Showgrounds!
Loser: Stephen Kenny
A very disappointing result for Kenny up in the Brandywell. Despite being 2-0 up away against Derry, his team couldn’t hold on to the lead and had to settle for a point each. They were comfortable for most the game but couldn’t see it out. A missed opportunity to close the gap above them. A stinging draw for Kenny and his team.
Winner: Cork’s Attack
Cork’s attack was very strong against Waterford. Late into the first half, a rasping volley from McLaughlin put Cork ahead before the break. A truly class goal. Great pressure in the Waterford third led to Murray getting hold of the ball and clinically finishing, putting the Rebel Army ahead by two. Are survival hopes truly off the table yet? There may be a light at the end of the corridor.
Loser: Drogheda United
They always say “it’s the hope that kills you”. That statement sums up that game for Drogheda fans who made the travel down to Tallaght to lose 2-1 to Rovers. The fans thought it was over by the 70th minute but an 83rd minute goal by Conor Keeley gave false hope of a comeback that may of gained them a point in a crucial battle for European football for next season.
